From New York City: “Anderson shines brilliantly.” - The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
For The End of the Moon, Anderson began examining the question, “Who taught you what beauty is?” Unable to provide an answer, Anderson sets off in search of one. In addition to her travels as NASA's first artist-in-residence, Anderson went out on a series of multi-day walks in various locations including Greece, France, England and Sri Lanka. Delving into what people think of as 'beauty', and embarking on a range of physical and philosophical explorations of the natural world, Anderson will make this appearance the must-see cultural event of 2005.
With her 1980 album, O Superman, Laurie Anderson hit number two on the British pop charts and put the genre called 'performance art' on the mainstream map. Since then, with albums like Big Science and Mister Heartbreak, and the feature film Home of the Brave, she has also built a reputation for mesmerizing live shows that range from simple spoken word performances to elaborate multimedia events.
Part travelogue, part personal theory, history and dream The End of the Moon looks at the relationships between war, aesthetics, spirituality and consumerism. Anecdotal, wide ranging and epic, this original work also features her new music for violin and electronics. Of The End of the Moon Anderson writes, “I find that the best way to look at our culture these days is not through a multi-media show, but with the simpler and sharper tools of words.”
