Mutton BustingCan you get a better deal than three festivals in one?

Under the umbrella of Mutton Busting, an annual performance creation festival, comes three mini-festivals all woven into one. Mutton Busting, Solosnippits and Ledgefest represent the newest crop of danger making emerging artists – sharper than cutting edge.

What kindergarten is to school, Mutton Busting is to the Rodeo.

What is this, Edmonton? Every year another five or six young creative theatre companies coalesce from the graduating flocks of your ACADs and U of Cs. Thankfully, Bubonic Tourist came along a few years ago and convinced Michael Green that all this creative ferment needed some place to bubble. But what started out as a Rodeo sideshow has become, in its own right, one of the leading multidisciplinary arts festivals in western Canada. Some fifty acts will enliven the ancillary stages this year.

Mutton Busting begins before the Rodeo (Jan 2).

Solosnippets
Jenny Repond and David Friese are big fans of one-pointed attention. Their company, Solocentric, and the festival of the same name held each May at the Big Secret Theatre, are concerned with explorations of the single-actor genre. Here’s a chance to sample some 10 quarter-hour bites like Nicole Zylstra’s Fortune Kooky and Stacie Harrison’s E-mail Diaries of the Slightly Neurotic.

Ledgefest
Put it this way: at recent Rodeos, the ambient music supplied to audiences coming and going via the Big Secret Theatre lobby included unrepentant experimenters like Bartok Guitarsplat and Land’s End Chamber Orchestra. Well, they’re both now in mainstage Rodeo events. The lesson? Catch this year’s crop of noisemeisters while you can still see them for free.
