da da kameraCul-de-sacVertigo Playhouse Theatre - January 7 to 11 From Toronto
One Yellow Rabbit audiences first acquainted themselves with the unique storytelling genius of Daniel MacIvor (abetted by his ever-present director, Daniel Brooks) in previous one-man shows like "Here Lies Henry" and "Monster". At times creepy and malevolent, MacIvor’s characters are nonetheless strung together with an unextinguishable sense of humour. But what is most remarkable is the actor’s almost eerie ability to serially conjure vastly different personalities with only the tiniest of physical and vocal gestures. This tale is told by the recently deceased Leonard, a gay man contemplating his demise by drifting through the narratives of his suburban neighbours. Here he is in the bedroom with the squabbling Joy and Eddie, then it’s across the roof of opera diva Virginia, in the window of crabby veterinarian Bick Bickerson, into the basement fortress of thirteen-year-old aspiring malcontent Madison, and through the mind of the raging, coked-up hustler Eric. With mounting suspense, the last sinister hours of Leonard are recollected in yet another minimalist tour-de-force by this master performer. Said the Toronto Star, "He shuffles accents, physical details and voices with the ease of a Mississippi cardsharp.... The result is the purest of pure theatre." |
