NUIT BLANCHE

Vertigo Playhouse - January 20 to 24

From Toronto

CorpusA brilliant mix of dance, clown and storytelling that glimmers with visual surprises.

Sylvie Bouchard and David Danzon, the Artistic Directors behind this Toronto-based dance company, fell in love at a Charlie Chaplin movie, so it’s perhaps no surprise that a critic once remarked on the “goofy, charmed, silent-movie world of Corpus.” Their signature method is to hurl dancers into absurd situations in order to expose the inherent silliness of the human condition. It’s a beguiling departure from the sometimes too-serious world of dance that appeals to audiences of all ages. After all, one seldom sees classically-trained dancers garbed, all droll and deadpan, as fluffy sheep. In this piece (translated from the French the title means “sleepless night”), we follow six insomniacs into a night of waking dreams. On this fantastical journey through the bizarre and familiar, bodies appear to float in thin air, and limbs thrust out with anatomical improbablity from behind black panels.

Nominated for the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography. Nuit blanche has an irresistibly ingenious charm... a clever concept developed with an outstanding six-member cast.... Bouchard and Danzon have a canny sense of pacing and never let Corpus outstay its welcome. Nuit blanche is...consistently engaging... the standing ovation that ensued was more than deserved." - Michael Crabb, National Post.
