Compagnie Marie Chouinard

CHORALE AND ETUDE #1

Jack Singer Concert Hall - January 3

From Montreal

chouinardAnother succès fou from Montreal's grand diva of modern dance.

After nearly a quarter-century of unflagging choreographic creation underscored by originality and integrity, Chouinard reigns as one of the world’s most engaging dance artists.

This visit marks Compagnie Marie Chouinard’s third appearance at the High Performance Rodeo; last year’s Cri du monde, like its predecessor, captivated its Calgary audience. There are two sections to this performance. Etude #1 is a breathtaking 40 minute solo to an electroacoustic composition by longtime Chouinard collaborator Louis Dufort. Clad in steel tipped dance shoes, Lucie Mongrain undulates and dislocates through an unbridled, yet geometric five-part dance.

The evening’s second act is Chorale, a brand-new ensemble piece for ten dancers. Here Chouinard creates a festive universe around the notions of sexuality and divinity, pushing to extremes both the corporeal and vocal architecture. Out of these singular bodies, fashioned by irresistible pulsations that stretch them and throw them off kilter, steal breathless, chanting, gurgling, howling and ululating voices. What follows is at once primitive and urbane, a series of situations that are intense, tender, humorous and profoundly human.

Chouinard has always viewed dance as a sacred art, and the body as its cherished vessel. With these pieces, that belief only deepens.
