CAMERA OBSCURA THEATRE

Centre Court - January 7 to February 1

From Calgary

Chris CranIt’s art! It’s science! From the annals of edutainment, welcome to a world turned upside-down.

The camera obscura—or pinhole camera, as we knew it in junior-high science—has a long history. In the fifth century B.C. Chinese philosopher Mo-Ti called it the "locked treasure room." Aristotle devised one to safely view a solar eclipse, while for artists like Vermeer and Canaletto, it served as a drawing aid. Recently painter Chris Cran built his own camera obscura booth, continuing a tradition once popular at seaside resorts. Rest assured, however, that Mr. Cran’s visual offering will in no way resemble a sunny day in Blackpool.
